Decorative Nihilism:
An Exhibition of New Paintings by Kevin Fey

For his latest exhibition, Decorative Nihilism, Kevin presents a new group of square paintings composed of acrylics, alkyds, enamels, resins, oils, pigments, solvents, canvas and gesso. Colors are seductive. Blacks are dark. Whites are white (and sometimes gray). Paints bleed, run, jitter, fight, blend, confuse the image and the object, and otherwise generally misbehave. Kevin is partner with these demanding and narcissistic materials, developing their internal aesthetics into outward appearances through drips, pours, tips, restraint, overcompensation, gravity, densities, revulsion, reactivities, and devotion.

Paintings focus on simple compositions that allow the materials a more generous forum for expression. Circles arrive as a weight of paint pushes canvas to the floor, straight lines appear as paint rushes off the canvas in response to gravity, and point like drips become larger forms as solvents pass over them. In Kevin’s new work there are no secrets, the paintings show off every aspect of their creation for the viewer to see.

Recent Work by Jordan Broadworth, Kevin Fey, and Rich Watts

Grand Opening is pleased to present Duck, Duck, Goose: Recent Work by Jordan Broadworth, Kevin Fey and Rich Watts. Broadworth and Fey are painters, Watts makes sculpture and screen prints. Rich Watts and Kevin Fey are both emerging artists, Broadworth is mid-career. Fey pours and drips, Broadworth adds and subtracts, Watts designs and constructs.  All three artists live and work in Brooklyn.

Jordan Broadworth’s paintings appear as if they were pulled inside-out. His work is governed by the fact that to build something up, something else must be taken down. Broadworth’s gestures are derived from the layering of multiple signatures and made visible through an absence rather than an assertion of paint.

Jordan Broadworth was born in Esquesing, Ontario, Canada in 1968. Broadworth studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (BFA 1992) prior receiving his MFA from the University of Guelph in 1996. He has exhibited extensively in public and commercial galleries in Canada and abroad. Reviews and articles on his work have appeared in The Globe and Mail, The Hudson Review, New York Times, Canadian Art Magazine, and C International.

Kevin Fey’s abstract paintings are material records of physical, gravitationally bound events. The viewer is witness to each reflexive spill, drip and nudge. He works within a set of indexical and syntactical operations that vary from work to work. The results point toward the decorative and the nihilistic, the grotesque and the humorous.

Kevin Fey was born in Vestal, New York in 1986. He received a BFA from The Cooper Union in 2008. Kevin’s work has been displayed in traditional and non-traditional art settings, notably the Savoy Bank, Scope Miami, and in the CW Network’s TV show “Gossip Girl”.

Rich Watts constructs simple forms with complex functions to perform simple tasks. Watts’ work often centers on novel ways of imparting information - information that may or may not be practical. His work has the ability to shed light on the viewers role as user or participant.

Rich Watts was born Barryville, New York in 1986. Watts studied at The Cooper Union and received his BFA in May of 2008. Watts engages in a wide range of art activities including sculpture, printmaking, and design. Watts recently had work featured in Magnan Projects’ Summer Group Show in Chelsea.
